We have made GoodNotes 4 and GoodNotes 5 part of an app bundle and you can use Complete My Bundle, to download GoodNotes 5 for free if you have paid the full price for GoodNotes 4.
Complete My Bundle takes whatever price you paid for the individual apps and credits it to the price of the bundle.
If you bought GoodNotes 4 for the price of USD 7.99, you'll receive a credit of 7.99 USD and you'll be able to complete the app bundle for USD 0.00 since the bundle's price is USD 7.99.
If you have paid less than the full price for GoodNotes 4, then you'll get whatever amount you paid as a credit to complete the bundle. Say, you have bought GoodNotes 4 for USD 0.99, you can complete your bundle for USD 7.00.
You can get the bundle on the App Store. To download it, please tap the blue download button at the top next to “Complete My Bundle”. It will either state “Complete” - meaning that you can upgrade for free - or show the price you will still have to pay for GoodNotes 5 based on what you paid for GoodNotes 4.
Here's how it looks like if you still need to pay something to upgrade to GoodNotes 5 by completing the bundle. In this case, GoodNotes 4 was purchased at a cheaper price.
If the button states COMPLETE, the upgrade is free.

You downloaded GoodNotes 4 for free, e.g. through a promo code or as a gift from someone else | The bundle will guarantee that you don't pay more than 7.99 USD for GoodNotes 4 and 5 combined as a previous customer. In this case, you will need to buy GoodNotes 5 for the regular price. |
You purchased GoodNotes 4 with a different Apple ID |
Please switch to the Apple ID you used to purchase GoodNotes 4 and complete the bundle. |
You purchased GoodNotes 4 on the iPhone |
Some users told us that they needed to complete the bundle on the device they used to buy GoodNotes 4. If you can't complete the bundle on the iPad, please try if it is possible on the iPhone. After that, you should be able to download GoodNotes 5 from your purchase history. |
