We're sorry to inform you that the GoodNotes 5 Upgrade Bundle is not available via the volume purchase program (VPP). The App Store doesn't offer the options to add app bundles to the VPP. This means it is not possible to upgrade for free/at a discounted price from 4 to 5 if you bought 4 through the VPP.
When we decided to start working on GoodNotes 5, we were facing the decision to either update the existing app or rewrite the entire codebase. We chose to go with the latter for many good reasons.
Large parts of GoodNotes 4 have been written by a single developer over the course of 7 years, so the old app contains a lot of so-called "Spaghetti code", which refers to code that is very hard to understand and maintain by other people. GoodNotes 5 is developed by a team of developers and has an entirely new architecture that allows everyone to read, change, and maintain it. The new codebase will allow us to add new features much faster and build the future of GoodNotes on the foundation. Features like global search or the nested folder structure would not have been possible with the way how the old app was written.
Of course, we know that releasing a new app would mean that we'd face the challenge of providing our existing customers with a fair way to upgrade. Luckily, we have discovered the unpopular trick of bundling both apps and setting the price of the bundle to the individual price, which makes sure that existing customers don't pay more than the current App Store price of 7.99 USD for GoodNotes 4 and 5 together. This is the ONLY way how we could offer a free/discounted upgrade to the majority of our existing customers.
We understand the frustration of anyone who purchased GoodNotes 4 as part of the VPP for their organization. It was an investment, probably even with a limited budget that you had to fight for internally. We tried finding a better solution but couldn't come up with something because the App Store is limited in terms of pricing.
If you decide to upgrade to the latest version, which is available at a discounted price through the VPP, we recommend trying to get a refund from Apple. We know from the past that people were able to get refunds for volume purchases of GoodNotes 3 almost a year later. As refunds are entirely managed by Apple, we can't promise anything.
If you previously purchased GoodNotes 4 for your organization, you can continue using it and we'll provide support for the app. We'll also add bug fixes and minor improvements to it but major new features will only be supported in GoodNotes 5. GoodNotes 4 will eventually be removed from sale on the App Store but we haven't decided on an exact time frame. Removing the app from sale doesn't affect your purchase as you can still use it. It only means that no more updates will be available.
