There are various file types and methods with which you can import to Goodnotes for Android, Windows, and Web. Whether you are looking to annotate lecture slides, markup an image, or drag and drop content, this article will look to address such questions.
Supported formats
The following formats are supported for import:
- Image
- PDF - please make sure the PDF file is not password protected
- Goodnotes (.goodnotes) - Study Set is not supported
Unsupported formats
The following formats are not supported for import:
- Element collection (.collection)

File size limits
While subscribed users enjoy unlimited notebooks, the import file size limit is 250Mb per file.
While free users have a limit of 3 notebooks, the import file size limit is 5Mb per file.
Import PDF and Goodnotes files as standalone documents
- In Documents tab, Choose the New button > Import.
- Select one or more files and confirm.
- New document(s) are created.
Importing Image files as standalone documents
- In Documents tab, Choose the New button > Image.
- Select one or more files and confirm.
- New document(s) are created.
Import from Camera photo as standalone document (Android devices only)
- In Documents tab, Choose the New button > Take photo.
- The Camera app is launch for you to take photo.
- Once a photo is taken, a new document is created.
Drag & Drop
Drag & Drop can be a really powerful way to organize and work with your documents. You can Drag & Drop files to the Goodnotes window to import them.
