Goodnotes for School Educational Licensing - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get Goodnotes for my school?

If your school or educational institution (K-12 or higher education) manages devices through Apple School Manager, you can now have the full version of Goodnotes for free. If your institution isn't yet using Apple School Manager, get enrolled first, then contact us.

What features are included in the full version?

You'll get the following extra features:

  • Creating / Importing unlimited (versus only 3) notebooks/files.
  • Importing documents by email. See Email to Goodnotes.
  • Interactive and AI features.

How do I get Goodnotes for School?

  1. Make sure you meet the installation requirements. Otherwise, the following steps won't work.
  2. Log in to Apple School Manager.
  3. Click Apps and Books under Content in the left sidebar
  4. Search for "Goodnotes" at the top of the middle panel.
  5. Complete the "Buy Licenses" details in the right-hand panel, and click Get.
  6. Once your desired number of Goodnotes copies (aka your "seats") have been obtained, get a license key. Be sure to indicate your school name and number of seats you require on your license.
  7. Once we have reviewed the information, we will send you a license key along with instructions on how to install it. (Please remember to check your junk mail folder in case the License Key email ends up there.)
  8. Deploy the license key via your MDM solution following the steps listed here.

I'm looking to deploy Goodnotes as an iPadOS/iOS app for my institution. Why is the app showing up in Apple School Manager as a macOS app?

This is likely a display issue that Apple needs to fix for apps using the Catalyst framework to make them universal (i.e. they can be used on both iPadOS/iOS and macOS).
Even so, you can still go ahead and deploy Goodnotes on iPadOS/iOS devices.

My school bought Goodnotes several days before it became a freemium app. How do we get a refund and then get the app for free?

Unfortunately, getting a refund isn't possible, per Apple's Terms and Conditions:

All sales are final.

Prices for Volume Content offered via the Service may change at any time, and the Service does not provide price protection or refunds in the event of a price reduction or promotional offering.

That said, you might still want to contact Apple in case they can accommodate your needs, and you can still contact us for a license key to keep using the Goodnotes app that you bought.

I'm a student with a personal Apple ID. Can I get the full version for free as an individual?

Unfortunately, this is not possible, since Goodnotes is currently offered for free through Apple School Manager only. Please contact someone in charge of purchasing digital content at your institution so that they can get the full version for you as an institution.

I have personally bought Goodnotes premium, and my school has deployed Goodnotes for School, which overrides my personal purchase. How do I switch to the non-institutional version?

The overriding is expected.

If you want to remove the device from the license and revert the app back to the non-institutional version, you'd need to:

  1. Go to About > Remove Device
    • This will remove the device from whatever license it's currently associated to. You should see a banner in the app explaining this and offering to re-enroll the device if desired.
  2. In the iOS Settings app, go to General > VPN & Device Management
    • There should be a Mobile Device Management section, under which you can select the MDM profile that includes the License Key and tap on Remove Management. This removes the MDM-injected data from Goodnotes, so the License Key is no longer present.
  3. Now you can delete and reinstall Goodnotes from the App Store. Once the app is reinstalled, you should see the non-institutional version of Goodnotes.

Where can I find more information about Apple School Manager?
