Goodnotes Cloud FAQs: privacy, storage, and data

This FAQ explains how Goodnotes Cloud stores, protects, retains, and exports your data.

Important: Goodnotes Cloud is being rolled out gradually. Goodnotes Cloud powers Goodnotes on Android, Windows, and Web.

What is Goodnotes Cloud?

Goodnotes Cloud is a cloud storage feature that backs up and syncs notes, documents, and other content created in Goodnotes. It securely stores your files online so you can access them across multiple devices.

Is my personal data safe in Goodnotes Cloud?

Yes. Your data is securely stored and encrypted. Goodnotes uses third-party cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, to provide the infrastructure for Goodnotes Cloud. These providers must protect your data under strict data-processing and confidentiality agreements.

Does Goodnotes access or collect data from my notes or documents?

No. Goodnotes does not access or collect data from notes or documents stored in Goodnotes Cloud unless you give explicit permission. The files are stored to provide backup and syncing services.

Who can access my notes and documents?

Only you can access content stored in your Goodnotes Cloud account unless you choose to share it. You can share documents with specific people through collaboration features in Goodnotes.

How long does Goodnotes keep my data?

Your data remains in Goodnotes Cloud while you maintain your Goodnotes account and continue using the service. If you delete your account or specific documents, the associated data is removed from Goodnotes Cloud.

What happens if my Goodnotes account becomes inactive?

As explained in clause 12.2 of the Goodnotes Terms & Conditions, Goodnotes may delete an account or data stored in Goodnotes Cloud if the account remains inactive for two years without payment.

Before removing data, Goodnotes sends reminder emails so you can download your notes as PDF or Goodnotes files, or renew your subscription to retain access.

This policy applies only to data stored in Goodnotes Cloud. It does not apply to notes stored locally or in iCloud. You will receive multiple warnings before Goodnotes Cloud data is removed.

How do I export my data from Goodnotes Cloud?

  1. Open the Goodnotes menu.
  2. Select Cloud & Backup > Cloud Sync.
  3. Select Manual Backup Documents.
  4. Select Back Up Now.

Where is my data stored?

Goodnotes Cloud uses third-party providers, including Amazon Web Services, to store your data. Your data may be transferred to servers outside your country, including outside the UK or European Economic Area. Goodnotes ensures that these transfers comply with applicable legal requirements for protecting personal data.

What happens if I disable Goodnotes Cloud?

If you disable Goodnotes Cloud, new changes will no longer sync to Goodnotes Cloud. Files that have already synced remain in Goodnotes Cloud until you delete them manually.

What happens if there is a data breach?

Goodnotes maintains measures and procedures designed to protect personal data and respond to security incidents. If a data breach occurs, Goodnotes will notify you and applicable regulators when required by law.
