Select content with the Lasso Tool

What It Does

One of the most flexible and powerful tools, the Lasso Tool allows you to select content created in the app and do all sorts of things on that content.

How to Use It

Note: Some of these features are only available for handwritten content, not pictures or other forms of notes.

Select content

  • Select the Lasso Tool, then drag to create a rectangle that covers the content you want to select. Alternatively, tap the Lasso tool twice and switch to the "Freehand" mode, then draw a loop around the content you'd like to select.

Note: A lasso that is larger than intended might select unintended objects nearby, too. To avoid this, you can draw a lasso that simply touches the intended object.

Move the content

  • Using your finger or pencil, drag the lassoed content to a new place.
Tip: It's possible to move a selection across page boundaries in Vertical Scrolling mode.

Manipulate the selection

The Object Menu, which appears when the content has been selected, displays icons for tasks relevant to the selection. Tap the More (…) icon to view icon labels and access additional options:

Available actions by object type:

  • General content:
    • Cut / Copy / Duplicate / Delete: Do the mentioned action on the selection.
    • (Bring to) Front / (Send to) Back: Send the selection to the topmost or bottommost layer.
    • Goodnotes AI: Ask questions about the selection with AI. Learn more about Ask Goodnotes.
    • Resize: Resize or rotate the selection. Learn more about Lasso Resize mode.edit mode.png
    • Color (shown if the selection is editable): Change the color of the selection.
    • Take Screenshot: Take a rectangular screenshot of the selection.
    • Add Element: Create an element from the selection. See Elements Tool.
    • Add Comment: Add a comment. See Add Comments to Notebooks.
