Customize the toolbar

Where customization is available

🔴 Apple Pencil quick toolbar: not customizable

 

Open the Toolbar Customization panel

You can access toolbar customization in several ways.

  1. Tap the Accessories dropdown menu > Select Toolbar Customization. Add or remove tools, rearrange their order, and create a workspace optimized for your workflow.
  2. When tools are hidden or there isn’t enough space on the toolbar, you can quickly access Toolbar Customization from the Tools or Writing Tools overflow menu. Hidden tools appear here so you can easily rearrange your workflow.

     
  3. Tap the More (⋯) menu > select Document Editing > select Toolbar Customization

Customizing the toolbar

There are several different ways you can prioritize your tools!

  1. Show or hide tools on the main toolbar

    • Hide: Tap the red (−) button next to the tool name, then tap Hide to confirm.
    • Unhide: Tap the green (+) button next to the tool name

    Note: Lasso Tool can’t be moved or hidden

  2. Reorder tools on the main toolbar
    • Long-press the tool and drag to desired position. You will see this will automatically update in the main toolbar.
  3. Add Zoom Window, Time Keeper, and Ruler to the main toolbar

    Note: Audio recording can’t be moved or hidden.


     

  4. Customize the Writing Tools menu
  5. Dock floating menus to any screen edge
  • Hold and drag the floating menu to a screen edge to dock it vertically. To free up space, click Writing Tools in the top toolbar to hide the active tool menu, then click Writing Tools again to bring it back.

Restore customization changes

  1. In the Toolbar Customization menu, tap the green (+) to unhide the tools.
  2. Tap Reset to Default Toolbar/Writing Tools Layout/Accessories Layout to revert to the built-in visibility and position of the tools. You can also reset the Writing Tools and Accessories menus by tapping into each section.

Change Undo/Redo buttons position

  1. Tap the More (⋯) menu > Document Editing
  2. Under the Toolbar section, select Undo and Redo Position to switch between left or right placement on the screen.

FAQ and Troubleshooting

Can’t find a hidden tool. How do I bring it back?

Open the Toolbar Customization menu and tap the green (+) button next to the tool name and it will automatically unhide.

Why can’t I move or hide Lasso?

Lasso stays first on the toolbar and can’t be moved or hidden.

Do these changes apply to all notes?

Yes, your toolbar customization changes will apply to all Notebooks and Whiteboards.

Can I save multiple toolbar presets?

No, presets are not supported.

Can I customize the Apple Pencil quick toolbar?

No, this is not customizable.
