Check Apple Pencil compatibility with your iPad and Goodnotes

Goodnotes supports Apple Pencil input when the Apple Pencil model is compatible with your iPad. Use the lists below to match your iPad with Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), or Apple Pencil (1st generation).

Important: An iPad can support Goodnotes without supporting every Apple Pencil model. Apple determines hardware compatibility, pairing requirements, and minimum iPadOS versions.

Find your iPad model

  1. Open the iPad Settings app.
  2. Select General > About.
  3. Check “Model Name”, then compare it with the lists below.

Apple Pencil Pro

Apple Pencil Pro requires iPadOS 17.5 or later and works with:

  • iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 or M5).
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 or M5).
  • iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, or M4).
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, or M4).
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro).

Apple Pencil (USB-C)

Apple Pencil (USB-C) requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later and works with:

  • iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 or M5).
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 or M5).
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation).
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th generation).
  • iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, or M4).
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, or M4).
  • iPad Air (4th or 5th generation).
  • iPad (A16).
  • iPad (10th generation).
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro).
  • iPad mini (6th generation).

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

Apple Pencil (2nd generation) works with:

  • iPad mini (6th generation).
  • iPad Air (4th or 5th generation).
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th generation).
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation).

Apple Pencil (1st generation)

Apple Pencil (1st generation) works with:

  • iPad mini (5th generation).
  • iPad (6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th generation).
  • iPad (A16).
  • iPad (10th generation).
  • iPad Air (3rd generation).
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation).
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch.
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch.

A USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is required to pair and charge Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (A16) or iPad (10th generation).
