Password Protection - Frequently Asked Questions

How does password protection work?

Your Notebooks are not encrypted when using Password Protection. Instead, a secure layer is added to your Notebook which blocks others from accessing it without unlocking it with your password or device authentication.

Can I set different password for each notebooks?

You can only create a single, universal password. This is then used to lock all chosen Notebooks in your library.

Can I use Face ID / Touch ID to unlock notebooks?

Yes, Face ID/Touch ID works as an additional layer on top of your password to let you unlock your Notebooks quickly and efficiently without having to input the password each time. You can enable this in the Document Privacy settings at any time so long as you know your current password.

If you choose to set up Face ID/Touch ID, your biometric data is not processed by Goodnotes and is managed by your device as per Apple's Biometric Privacy Policy.

What happens if I forget my password?

If you forget your password, you will not be able to reset it, and any notes that are currently locked will not be recoverable. If you had set up FaceID/Touch ID, you can use this to unlock your Notebooks to export or duplicate them to create a version without a password. However, if you had not set this up, you will be unable to access any locked Notebooks.

Is Password Protection shared across devices?

Yes, locking a document on one device will lock it across all of your devices using the same Goodnotes account. Your password and hint will remain the same on each device.

Why can’t I open locked documents on Web/Android?

Password Protection is currently only available on Goodnotes for iOS. Users on Android, Windows and Web will currently not be able to use this feature.

Can I change my password?

Yes, you can change your password by going to the Gear Menu in the top right corner of the Library View > Settings > Document Privacy > Change Password. Please note that you will need to know your existing password when changing password.

Why are some of my documents not showing up on search results anymore?

Any Notebook that is locked with Password Protection, will not show up in your search results. Please bear this in mind if you use the Library Search feature often in your workflow.
