Lock Objects

With locking objects, you can secure images, text, shapes, and sticky notes so they can’t be moved by accident. You will still be able to annotate freely over locked content!

What objects can be locked?

  • Images
  • Sticky Notes
  • Shapes
  • Textboxes

Note: Currently, handwritten notes, elements, arrows, connectors cannot be locked.

How to lock/unlock an object

Locking

  1. Select the object and tap the 3-dots menu
  2. Tap Lock Image/Textbox/Shape/Sticky Notes (depending on the type of object)
  3. The object can’t be moved until it’s unlocked. Edit options will still be available. You will notice in the object bar that the delete button is now replaced with a lock.

Note: Currently, selecting multiple objects to lock is not supported.

Unlocking

  1. Select the object and tap the Unlock button in the object bar.
  2. The object can’t be moved until it’s unlocked. Edit options will still be available. The object bar will replace the lock icon with the delete button.

Working with Collaborators

Collaborators will see objects as locked, with the option to unlock it. If a collaborator is on an older Goodnotes version, the lock and unlock features won’t be available, so the object won’t be locked for them. All collaborators must use version 7.0.10 or later.

Benefits of Locking Objects

  • Prevent accidental moves. Stop images, sticky notes, shapes or textboxes from being moved or deleted by mistake.
  • Annotate freely over locked content. Add notes on top of locked elements without them shifting to the back.
  • Organize layers. Layer text, images, and drawings without elements interfering with each other.
  • Keep elements in place. Lock objects to a specific position on the page.
  • Control object positioning in shared documents. Collaborators see objects locked and can't unexpectedly move or delete them—they can only do so when they intentionally unlock them.
