We’re rolling out an updated Goodnotes experience on Windows through the Microsoft Store, including a quick Data health check you can run if anything looks missing after you update. You may be asked to sign in again, and you might briefly see fewer notebooks than expected. This is not data loss. It usually means some of your notes were saved locally in the older app and just need to finish syncing.
What’s changing
The Microsoft Store version of Goodnotes for Windows is moving from our previous Windows app to a refreshed version.
This change helps us improve the Windows experience over time and support future Windows features more reliably.
What you might notice after updating
After you update Goodnotes from the Microsoft Store:
- You may be asked to sign in again.
- You may see a message suggesting a data health check.
- A small number of users may temporarily see an empty library or missing recent notebooks/notes.
This can happen because the previous app and the refreshed app do not share the same local storage. Your content is still on your device, and once it is synced, it will appear in the refreshed app.
Run the data health check (recommended if anything looks missing)
If you notice any missing notebooks or recent changes:
- In the Goodnotes Windows app, tap the prompt to run a Data health check.
- A browser tab will open in Microsoft Edge.
- Keep the tab open while the check runs. You may see a spinner indicating the check is in progress. Most checks finish in under a minute.
If you have dismissed the Data Health Check prompt
You can run the Data health check later from app setting. Goodnotes menu (Upper right of Library) > Account Info (Your name) > Account Settings > Run a data health check.
Frequently asked questions
Will my notes be lost during this update?
No. This is usually a sync and storage transition issue, not real data lost. Your notes are still stored safely on your device, and once they finish syncing, they will appear in the refreshed app.
Why do I only see this on Windows app and not on my Android app?
This prompt is specific to the Windows Microsoft Store app update and how local storage works between the older Windows app and the refreshed Windows app.
How do I know if I’m on the refreshed Windows app?
Check your Goodnotes app version in the Microsoft Store. If your app is version 2.1 or later, you are using the refreshed Windows app.
Can I use the app while the data health check runs?
Yes. The check runs in an external browser tab, so you can continue using the app.
Why are some notes still missing after the data health check?
If you use multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge (for example, Personal and Work), the data health check may open in the profile you used most recently, which might not be the same profile you used with Goodnotes before. If your data is stored under a different Edge profile, those notes won't appear or sync during the check. To fix this, switch to the Edge profile you previously used with Goodnotes (for example, your Personal profile), then run the data health check again.
If you still don’t see your notes
- Make sure you are signed into the correct Goodnotes account.
- Run the Data health check again.
- If your library still looks incomplete after running Data Health check, contact Goodnotes Support.
