Select content
- Select the Lasso Tool.
-
Draw a loop around the content you want to select.
Tips:
- By default, a circular (free-form) lasso is used, but you can switch to the rectangular lasso so you can drag your pen diagonally to create a frame to enclose the content you want to select.
- To make sure you only select the content you intend to, the loop or frame you create should touch only the object you want to select. If the loop/frame is too big, you might end up selecting things nearby unintentionally.
Selecting some content brings up the Object Menu, which displays icons for common tasks relevant to the selection. Open the More (…) menu of the Object Menu to view icon labels and access additional options:
Circle to Lasso
Instead of breaking your flow and switch to the Lasso Tool, you can use the Pen Tool to select and manipulate groups of notes with the Circle to Lasso Pen Gesture.
- Using the Pen Tool, lasso the area you would like to select.
- Lift up your pen, then long press with your pen on the circle stroke you have made.
- You will notice your circle turn into a dotted line, indicating that you now have a Lasso selection.

How to Customize It
As with all tools, you can tap the tool again to adjust its settings.
By default, the tool selects every kind of object that you created on the page, but you can instruct it to select only certain objects. For example, you might want to select handwriting over an image, but not the image itself.
- Lasso Type: Choose between Rectangular or Freehand lasso selection mode. Rectangular works well for organized notes, while freehand is better for curved or irregular shapes.
- Included in Selection: Enable the type(s) of content the Lasso selects.
- Disconnect Apple Pencil: Tap the button to use your finger with the tool. To reconnect Apple Pencil, simply start writing.
