I can't import Excel spreadsheets

If you try to import an Excel file into Goodnotes, the file may appear greyed out or fail to import. This usually means the file format is not supported.

Please note: Goodnotes does not support Excel spreadsheets (.xls or .xlsx). To work with spreadsheet content in Goodnotes, convert the file to PDF first, then import the PDF.

Why Excel files cannot be imported

Goodnotes is designed for annotating documents such as PDFs, images, and supported Office files. Excel files are not on the supported import list, so they cannot be opened directly in the app.

If you need to review or mark up spreadsheet content, import a PDF version instead. This keeps the layout fixed so you can write on top of it.

Convert your spreadsheet to PDF

Use the method that matches where your file is stored.

On iPad or Mac

  1. Open the spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, Numbers, or another app that can export to PDF.
  2. Export or share the file as a PDF.
  3. Import the PDF into Goodnotes. See Import files into Goodnotes.

On iPad using the Print menu

If you can open the spreadsheet in another app on your iPad:

  1. Open the file, then tap Share.
  2. Tap Print.
  3. Pinch outward on the print preview to open it full screen.
  4. Tap Share again, then choose Open in Goodnotes.

On Windows, Android, or Web

  1. Convert the Excel file to PDF on your computer or in Excel online.
  2. Import the PDF into Goodnotes on your device.

Supported import formats

Goodnotes supports different file types depending on your platform. Word and PowerPoint files can be imported on Apple devices, but Excel is not supported on any platform.

For the full list of supported formats and import methods, see Import files into Goodnotes.

Please note: Comma- or tab-separated files (.csv, .tsv) can be imported on Apple devices to create flashcards, but this is not the same as importing an Excel workbook.
