Fix the E001-E or E001-N Library Error

The “E001-E” and “E001-N” alerts can appear when an underlying Goodnotes database is damaged. This can affect writing, copying, importing, or exporting. The relevant codes are “E001-E or E001-N”.

Important: protect your data before attempting a repair. A repair may dismiss the error, but some data might remain missing. Do not delete or reinstall Goodnotes unless you have confirmed a usable backup or recovery path.

Check your backups first

  1. Check whether Use iCloud to Sync Documents is enabled and whether any sync error is shown.
  2. Review Automatic Backup and its Excluded List. Export excluded documents separately in PDF and Goodnotes formats where possible.
  3. Create a manual backup.
  4. Export the library as PDF and confirm that the files show your notes.
  5. If another device is available, test whether it can import the Goodnotes backup and display your notes.

Try the library repair

  1. On the affected device, open the matching link in Safari:
  2. Select Open when prompted.
  3. Read the warning and confirm only when you are ready.
  4. Wait for the repair to finish. If Goodnotes restarts, repeat the steps to resume it.
  5. Force quit Goodnotes, then reopen it.

If the error remains

If you still see the error after repair, protect the on-device data and check your recovery options.

If no backup can be verified, exports fail, or notes are missing, do not uninstall Goodnotes. Contact Goodnotes Support with the exact error code and backup-check results.
