If you see random lines appearing unexpectedly in either horizontal and vertical directions while writing your notes, this article will provide wider context as to what the issue is and why the lines might occur.
With writing being a fundamental aspect of using the app, it makes sense why this issue can be so frustrating for our users.
Context:
This issue is a widely-reported fault across various writing apps, and is ultimately a hardware-related issue*. The simplest fix for this issue is to report the problem to Apple, as users who have reported this and received a replacement Apple Pencil (or in some cases, an iPad) have confirmed that the replacement hardware solves this issue.
Troubleshooting:
The first recommended step is to run our basic Apple Pencil troubleshooting, which may identify hardware faults or fix the issue. If not, consider contacting Apple for a replacement.
Though this seems to be a hardware issue, users have shared tips that might help without replacing the Pencil:
- Try different Pen tools: Some users find the issue only occurs with pressure-sensitive tools (Brush, Fountain pen), others with Ball Pen or highlighter. Experiment to find a tool that works.
- Clean or replace the Apple Pencil tip: Remove and clean the tip and sensor area. If needed, replace the tip.
- Change or remove your screen protector: Especially tempered glass protectors can cause issues; removing them may help.
- Eliminate static or interference: Avoid using the iPad while charging, remove the case, keep away from other electronics, and use a non-metallic surface. Touching a metal part of the iPad can ground static charge.
- Adjust "Palm Rejection" settings: Increasing palm rejection may prevent confusion between palm and Pencil. Learn more here.
- Keep the screen dry: Moisture like sweat or water can affect Pencil interaction.
- Modify double-tap sensitivity (Apple Pencil 2 only): Changing or disabling this can help. Apple's guide here.
- Reconnect Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect the Pencil.
- Disable "Zoom" in Accessibility settings: Some users fixed the issue by turning off Zoom (Settings > Accessibility).
- Reinstall the app: This has resolved the problem for some, but back up your device first using iCloud, Auto-Backup, or Manual Backup.
- Reset your iPad: Back up your data, then follow these steps. If unsure, visit an Apple Store for assistance.
