Toggle visibility of content with the Tape Tool

The Tape Tool is a great way to study using active recall and can be used to hide and show information in your Notebooks with a single touch.

What is the Tape Tool?

The Tape Tool can be used to cover a sentence or answer in your Notebook which can then be revealed with a simple touch. It is a great way to study using active recall, a method of study for revision to help with memory. The Tape Tool can be used in cases where you may not want to create a whole new Study Set.

Beyond solid colors, you can choose from preset patterns and customize their colors to match your style. You can also find additional patterns in the Marketplace, where creators share their unique designs. These decorative patterns help enhance your notes visually and can support your study process.

Use the Tape Tool

The Tape Tool can be found in your Handwriting Toolbar. When selected, simply use your pen to draw a line over your chosen text. You will then find that the text underneath can no longer be seen. To reveal the text below, simply tap the Tape with your finger. You can also do this in Read-Only Mode!

Here you can see how Tape can be used to cover up an answer, which will be revealed with a tap of your finger. 

Use a preset stroke

  • Tap one of the stroke slots in the contextual section located on the right-hand side.
  • To customize this slot, tap it again and adjust the thickness slider.

Set tape style

  • Tap one of the color/pattern slots in the contextual section located on the right-hand side.

  • To customize this slot, tap it again and choose a color/pattern for the slot. Tape patterns are displayed below the solid color options:

    💡 Tip: Recently used patterns will appear in your History tab for quick access

Add another color/pattern slot to the toolbar

You have the option to add up to 12 color/pattern slots, making it easy to switch between them whenever you need to.

  1. Tap the Add Slot icon at the end of the scrollable contextual section:

  2. Choose a color/pattern for the new slot.

Delete a custom color/pattern slot

  1. Tap the slot twice.

  2. Tap the Settings icon in the top-left corner.

  3. Choose Remove Selected Slot and confirm. Note that this option won’t be available if you have only 3 slots.

    ℹ️ To quickly delete all the custom color/pattern slots, choose Restore color/pattern sets to original.

Customize the tool

As with all tools, you can tap the tool again to adjust its settings.

  • Straight tape: Enable it to help you write perfectly straight tape.
  • Remove all tape: Clear all tape on the current page.

Manage your tape palette

  1. Tap the selected color/pattern slot in the right-hand section > Edit (top-right button):

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To reorder a color or pattern, long-press and drag it.
    • To customize (or delete) a color, tap it and make changes (or choose Remove color):
    • To add another color/pattern, tap the Add icon and you can:

      Add a solid color:

      1. Create a color by choosing one from the palette or the color wheel, entering a color code in the HEX field, or tapping the Eyedropper (Color Picker) in the top-right corner to select a precise color pixel on the screen.

      2. Tap Add to Presets.

Upload from Files and choose an image (optimal size: 100x100 pixels). The app will generate a repeating pattern from your image.

Customize a preset and change its colors, then choose Add to Presets (top-right button):

Get more tape patterns from the Marketplace

Expand your collection with patterns from Goodnotes Marketplace.

  1. Access the Marketplace through:
    1. The marketplace icon in the tape color popover
    2. The "Tape Patterns" category in the Marketplace
  2. Browse and purchase new patterns
  3. Purchased patterns will automatically appear at the end of your tape palette. Look for the confirmation alert when your new tape patterns are installed.

Share Notebooks with Tape

You can share your Notebooks with Tape with other Goodnotes users. Your peers will also be able to use the Tape functionality so long as they are using Goodnotes 6. This can be done through Collaboration or by Exporting your document. 

Please note: If you are sharing a document as a PDF, Tape will only appear on the page and will not be interactive as Tape is an exclusive feature of Goodnotes 6.
